The Last of the Lasts

Anne Thompson, Editor

For many Seniors, and most other students in our school, the countdown towards the end of the school year has begun. Talk about summer plans has started, most Seniors have decided where they are going to college next year, and the warming of the weather is making sitting in class just a little bit harder. But through all these changes and transitions, Seniors have to realize that this is the finishing up of an era for them. Their last time being a high school athlete, the last school dance they attend, and the last time they get to share these sacred moments with the people they have grown closest with over the years. Everything is happening so fast, and it’s easy to get wrapped up in the routine of wanting it done fast. These are the last of the lasts for Seniors, and there is nothing more important than to relish in the next two months because once May 27th arrives there is no turning back.

It may seem as if sitting in a desk each day listening to a lecture for a class that has nothing to do with what you want to do as a career is a complete utter waste of time. The “I can’t wait to get out of here and be at college” phrase that is heard more times than not. And the daily countdown of days until graduation on many students’ laptops. Sure summer is going to be incredible, and college is a going to be some of the best years of our lives. But what about now? Seniors have less than 9 weeks of being a Totino-Grace student. Isn’t that something that we should be celebrating and being excited about now? There are still things to discover with the time left in school. Talk to others outside of your friend group, go watch a girls golf match even though you don’t know anyone on the team, create deeper relationships with your teachers. The options are endless. Don’t just wait for time to pass. Make the most out of every opportunity while you still have the chance. A famous quote once said by Abe Lincoln states, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years”. Fill these final days with memories and make them count. High School is too precious to wish away.
