Though they lost the last game to Hutchinson, the TG football team has jumped out to a hot start for this season, winning the first two games, one even being against last year’s state champions, Simley Spartans. The Eagles believe this will be the most successful season in years.
Senior offensive guard, Quaziell Davis said, “This team is special, due to the team having a strong connection and wanting to win.” Other players sound like they are all wanting to get to the state championship too. “A realistic goal,” Davis said when talking about the team’s goals for this year. Losing games can be tough but as long as they stay resilient they have a good shot at winning a lot of games.
They have shown glimpses of what really could be a state championship team, especially watching their defense play so well the first couple weeks. Davis confidently suggested that “ when the final whistle blows I believe the TG Eagles will be holding the state championship trophy.”
The team captains have made sure that they keep everything in check and are constantly striving to make the team better. Senior Adam Molitor said “At practice we are pushing each other to be as good as we can be.”The team practices everyday and works their butts off to make sure they get better before the next game.
The students can even notice a much bigger change in the football team this season. “Our expectations are to get better after every week and play our best football,” said Junior quarterback Jacob Person.
The team will have to stay united if they would like to keep their hopes up and make a run at a state championship. “Having a strong bond beforehand is super important, and the bond between teammates can’t be based around winning,” said Person. Person, Molitor and Davis all have high hopes for this team and believe in them.
The motto this year is “be different.” This was picked as the motto to strive to be the best part of themselves and show the state how TG football is different from other schools football programs. Players want to prove what kind of team that they are. Continuing to push themselves and push each other could result in major success for the team.
Currently Max Preps, the online news site for high school sports, has the team ranked as seventh in the state, though many feel they should be higher in the rankings. Both players and coaches believe that they have enough talent on the team to be number one.
Owen Swedberg, a senior offensive tackle, said that “ I am extremely confident that we will be in the state tournament this year.” This kind of thing coming from players on the team brings a lot of hope to the students at TG.
TG students are more excited than ever to go watch their team play and win games. “Going to the games has been a highlight of my week,” said one student.
The team and school are hopeful to see the state championship trophy back at TG this year. Players on the team have made it their goal.
