Powderpuff Game
October 14, 2016
Each year during homecoming week, Totino-Grace puts on a popular event known as Powderpuff. Powderpuff is a game of football with a twist: the senior girls and junior girls face off with the boys acting as the coaches. The seniors took the win with the score of 38-16.
Brady Bertram, a coach for the winning senior team, said, “There is no star on this team… the only star is the team. We instilled that mindset since day one and the girls really took that to heart. The offense executed all the plays, and we punished them with the running game. The defense made some huge stops throughout the game because the juniors’ offensive coaching staff was weak.”
Bertram went on to say the game was, “The easiest game I have ever coached in. We were locked in from the first whistle and we took the field on a mission and that was to run through the juniors’ faces and then we wouldn’t have to worry about them anymore. I’d say we did that pretty successfully. We dominated from start to finish.”
When asked what the largest struggle was Kyle Halverson, another senior coach, said, “The biggest struggle was by far half the team showing up late to practice. It’s not acceptable at all and half of our practice consisted of the girls running laps for being late.”
Nathan Schutz, head coach of the junior team said, “I would like to say that this loss does not define us. It does not control who we will be in the future. It cannot take away from how close the team has grown over the years, and we will certainly be back for more. Our team is a hungry one. The loss simply motivated us to start working again for next year, and we will do nothing but prepare until then.”
Nathan said the star players of the game were Maddie Doran, Bel Lewis and Lexi Serreyn. Serreyn for offense, Doran for rushing yards, and Lewis for running back and nose guard. Schutz said star player
Many of the junior girls plan on playing next year and are beginning to prepare for the big game during the off season.
