Diversity at Totino-Grace

Diversity encompasses a range of different topics, ideas, values, backgrounds, ethnicities, and more. As the 2017-2018 school year begins at Totino-Grace High School, it is important to review what diversity currently looks like and means to our school. TG values diversity as the community has become more diverse.

Mrs. Cheri Broadhead, current principal of Totino-Grace High School described the community. She said, “Our culture is one that I would describe as a family. I think that we have a really strong sense of community here. And I believe that our culture is one that puts students first.” Mrs. Broadhead also mentioned that this year is the most racially and culturally diverse she has ever experienced in 20 years at Totino-Grace. She also agrees that the uniqueness plays a significant role in making TG a more thriving community.

Mrs. Heidi Chiodo, registrar and counseling office administrative assistant, came to Totino-Grace High School last year. She was previously at Robbinsdale – Cooper High School and Minneapolis North High School. Mrs. Chiodo mentioned, “TG does a great job with inclusiveness.” She does not feel any separation of classes especially in racial and financial differences in the school. She absolutely agrees that racial and cultural diversity is important at Totino-Grace, and to all schools in general. Mrs. Chiodo believes students need to have real-world experiences and encounter people from various cultures and backgrounds.

Mr. Nicholas Hoang, TG technology staff, and 2008 graduate noticed that TG has recently accepted more international students than when he was in school at TG. He said, “It is actually important to have a diversity in schools. You have to experience it at some point. And you have to be open to experiencing it.” Mr. Hoang would like to have more diversity in TG staff members, but at the same time, he believes that it does not have to be mandated when it comes to hiring a new staff. It is more important for the new hire to be the right fit for the environment rather than to make a group appear more diverse.

Everyone at TG comes with their own background and culture. It is important to embrace and share our individuality and uniqueness. A racially and culturally diverse community is essential to the school.
